What is a Demat account?

Demat account is the account that holds all your shares in electronic or dematerialized form. A Demat account holds the certificates of your financial instruments like shares, bonds, government securities, mutual funds etc. You cannot trade in the stock market without a demat account. You can open DEMAT account from any Global IME Bank Branch or from Global Capital or Through Digital Universe. It is essential to have a bank account, account will be then linked to DEMAT. You can also open bank account online.

What is Mero Share?

Mero share is the application provided by CDSC to view the DEMAT statement, online portfolio and C ASBA through online. It allows you to view your share portfolio apply for Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) and other share issues through online and share transfer (EDIS)from anywhere

What is a CRN?

A CRN, or C-ASBA Registration Number, is a unique number provided by your bank. You need this number to apply for IPOs and other public offerings through Mero Share and CASBA. It links your bank account with your Demat account for seamless transactions.

Who needs a Demat account and why?

Anyone who wants to invest in the Nepali stock market needs a Demat account. It is essential for:

  • To convert the physical securities into the electronic form,
  • To deposit and transfer the NEPSE listed securities in a dematerialized form,
  • To credit the securities allotted through IPO and corporate actions (such as rights share issue, bonus issue, merger, etc.) in a dematerialized form,
  • To receive the statement of the securities held in a Demat account,
  • To pledge the securities held in a Demat account,
  • Applying for IPOs, FPOs (Follow-on Public Offerings), and right shares
  • Share purchase and sell transaction

Eligibility Criteria

You are eligible to open a Demat account if you are a:

  • Nepali Citizen: All adult Nepali citizens with valid identification can open a Demat account. Minors can also have accounts opened in their name with a guardian.
  • NRN (Non-Resident Nepali): NRNs can open a Demat account by providing the necessary documents. To open a Demat account in Nepal as a Non-Resident Nepali (NRN), you’ll need to provide specific documents, including a copy of your NRN ID or passport and visa, along with a Nepali bank account and contact details.
  • Foreign Employee: Individuals in foreign employment can open a special type of Demat account.

Requirements: You will need valid identification, such as a Nepali Citizenship certificate or a passport.


Types and status of Demat Accounts

  • Individual Account: An account held by a single person.
  • Foreign Employment: This is a special category of Demat account for individuals who are currently employed abroad and have a valid foreign-work permit. It often has a reservation quota in IPOs and will allow to apply for foreign employment reserved IPOs.
  • Dormant vs. Active: Your account is ‘Active’ when you open it. If there are no transactions for a certain period, it may become ‘Dormant’. Your account may also become inactive if you have unpaid annual fees.

How to Open a Demat Account?

You can open a Demat account with Global IME Capital, a subsidiary of Global IME Bank Branch, Global IME Capital or online through Digital Universe.

From Nepal:

  1. Online: The easiest way is to apply online through the Global IME Capital website or Digital Universe. You may need verify your identity through Video KYC or by visiting the branch.
  2. In-Branch: You can visit any branch of Global IME Bank Brach and fill out a Demat account application form. Global IME Capital also facilitates the opening of Demat account.

From Abroad (for NRNs and Foreign Employees):

You can open a Demat account from abroad by following these steps:

  1. Visit the Global IME Capital or Digital Universe Portal.
  2. Fill in the online application form for ” Foreign Employment” or “NRN” as applicable.
  3. You will need to upload scanned copies of your passport, a recent photograph, and your signature, and work permit – shram swikriti if required.
  4. You will need to verify your identity through Video KYC.
  5. Follow the instructions provided during the online application process for fee payment and submission.

CRN Registration:

  • How to register: In Digital Universe, EkSath5, you can apply for Mero Share and CRN at the same time you apply for your Demat account. There is a section in the application form for this. If you already have DEMAT, you can also select meroshare or CRN individually.
  • In branch option: You can also get your CRN number and link it by submitting the C-ASBA form.

Required Information and Documents

  • Nepali Citizens: CASBA application form with copy of Nepali Citizenship certificate.
  • For Foreign Employment: A copy of your passport and visa with proof of foreign employment (e.g., visa, work permit (shram shrwikiti).

DEMAT Account Opening Process

  1. Application Submission: To open DEMAT online, fill out the application form EkSath5 – Digital Universe or Global IME Capital or physical form at a branch.
  2. KYC Verification: The bank will verify your details (Know Your Customer) – in person or video KYC.
  3. Account Activation: Once verified, your Demat account will be activated.
  4. CRN Generation: If you applied for it, your CRN will be generated. Or you need to submit C-ASBA form.
  5. Communication: You will receive your Demat account number, Mero Share login details, and CRN via email to your registered details.

Common Issues and Resolutions

  • Demat account not opening/activated: There might be a delay due to incomplete information in your form. Please ensure all details are correct. If the delay is significant, contact our support team at Global Connect.
  • CRN number not received: Sometimes, there can be a delay in sending the CRN after your Demat account is active. Please wait 2-3 working days. If you still haven’t received it, please contact our support team.
  • Charges deducted but no account details received: If charges have been applied but you haven’t received your Demat details, please contact our customer support with your transaction details. You are also requested to check spam folder.
  • Bonus shares not credited: The crediting of bonus shares depends on the company’s timeline for completing its book closure and distribution process. This can sometimes take a few weeks or even months after the announcement. Please check with the respective company or our capital for updates.

DEMAT Account Conversion and Changes

How do I change my Demat account from ‘General Public’ to Foreign Employment?

To change your account type, you will need to:

  1. Contact Global IME Bank’s customer service with required documents such as Work Permit.
  2. Submit an application for account conversion.
  3. Provide supporting documents, such as your passport and proof of foreign employment.

What should I do if charges were applied, but I haven’t received my Demat password?

What does my Demat number (e.g., 13011200046XXXXXX) mean?

Your 16-digit Demat number is your unique identification number. The first 8 digits (13011200) represent the Depository Participant ID (Global IME Capital in this case), and the last 8 digits are your unique client ID.

When will the bonus shares of the last fiscal year be credited to my Demat account?

The timing for crediting bonus shares is determined by the respective company after their Annual General Meeting (AGM). It can take some time. Please follow announcements from the company.

What should I fill in the Demat number field during an online application if I don’t have one?

If you are applying for a new Demat account, you should leave this field blank. This number will be generated and provided to you once your account is created.
