How to get a National ID Card in Nepal?

In recent years, the Government of Nepal has made the National Identity Card (NID) mandatory for accessing a wide range of essential services. Documents Required to Apply for National Identity Card (NID)

To apply for your NID, make sure you have following documents:

  1. Original Citizenship Certificate (mandatory)
  2. Photocopy of the Citizenship Certificate
  3. Marriage Certificate (required if married, but spouse’s name is not listed in your citizenship document).
  4. Migration Certificate (in case of migration from one place to other)
  5. Original Password (if Password is already issued)
  6. Proof of date of birth if not mentioned on citizenship (like academic documents, birth registration or passport/ pension certificate)

How to Apply for National Identity Card in Nepal

Step 1: Visit the official sites of Department Of National ID and Civil Registration https://enrollment.donidcr.gov.np/PreEnrollment/

Step 2: Navigate to the Login to Individual section then click Login.

Step 3: Enter a valid mobile number. After submitting a mobile number you will receive an OTP via SMS. Enter a OTP sent to a mobile number for further processing.

Step 4: After that you will navigate to a pre enrollment dashboard. Click the New Enrollment section.

Step 5: Fill the Pre Enrollment Form. Fill in the personal information, contact details, family details. 

Step 6: After filling up all the information, verify every information and select the date and place for the biometrics appointment.

Now you can visit the respective District Administration Office (DAO) with required documents and printed form of NID on the appointment date. Non Permanent residents of Kathmandu valley can visit Narayanhiti Durbar (Old Passport Department). 

Visit the Enrollment Center for Biometric Data Collection

This is the final step in your NID application process, where your biometric data—photo, fingerprints, and iris scan—will be officially recorded.

  • Go to the Assigned Enrollment Center on Your Appointment Date.
  • Bring a printed copy of your pre-enrollment form and all other necessary documents like (citizenship, migration certificate, marriage certificate).
  • Avoid wearing heavy makeup, rings, earrings, hats, or a burkha during your biometric appointment, and ensure your face and both ears are clearly visible for accurate photo capture.
  • At the time of biometrics your Photo, fingerprint of all ten fingers, iris scan and digital signature is taken.
  • After completing biometrics the detailed report of NID along with NID number is provided to check if there are errors.

Not yet. In the first phase, NID is only issued to citizens with a citizenship certificate. In the second phase, minors, NRNs, and foreigners living in Nepal will also be eligible. A public notice will be shared before that begins.

7. Can I get a new National Identity Card if it’s lost, damaged, or unusable?

Yes. If your NID is lost, damaged, or unusable, you can apply for a replacement by submitting an application with the reason at the District Administration Office or Area Administration Office. After verification, a copy of the card will be issued.
