Green and Sustainable Solutions

Hydropower is particularly valuable due to Nepal's vast network of rivers and the steep terrain of the Himalayas, which create ideal conditions for harnessing water power. Nepal has an estimated economically viable hydropower potential of over 42,000 MW, making it one of the richest countries in terms of hydropower resources. Developing hydropower projects in Nepal could provide a sustainable and cost-effective source of energy for both domestic consumption and export. (HYDROPOWER DEVELOPMENT AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN NEPAL 2020)
From an economic perspective, hydropower can reduce Nepal's dependency on expensive imported fossil fuels for electricity generation. By harnessing domestic water resources, the country can substitute costly energy imports with locally produced, clean electricity, thereby reducing foreign exchange expenditure. This shift can also stimulate local industries, create jobs, and support economic growth by providing a stable and affordable energy supply, essential for sectors like manufacturing, agriculture, and services. Additionally, this boost in infrastructure development would create long-term employment opportunities, helping to improve the overall standard of living and economic stability in Nepal.
Recognizing the importance of hydropower for sustainable development, Global IME Bank supports the promotion and development of renewable energy resources in Nepal. We believe that investing in hydropower is essential for long-term economic growth, as it provides clean, reliable, and affordable energy, which is crucial for driving industrialization, improving infrastructure, and fostering socio-economic development in Nepal.

Solar energy systems convert sunlight into electricity through photovoltaic (PV) cells. This process produces zero emissions and offers an environmentally-friendly way to generate power, making it an attractive option for businesses and large-scale energy projects alike. The solar energy systems we finance are tailored for both rooftop installations and utility-scale solar projects.
Solar energy offers a reliable and cost-effective solution to address Nepal's growing energy demands and improve energy access for rural communities, particularly in areas that are not connected to the national grid or have limited access to electricity. By tapping into renewable energy sources like solar, the country can lower its reliance on imported energy, stabilize the national grid, and improve energy security. Furthermore, the growth of the solar energy sector presents opportunities for job creation, particularly in the areas of installation, maintenance, and infrastructure development.
At Global IME Bank, we are committed to financing both rooftop and utility-scale solar energy projects that contribute to Nepal's sustainable energy future. By investing in solar power, we aim to support Nepal's efforts toward energy independence, reduce vulnerabilities to energy supply disruptions, and drive long-term economic growth for businesses and communities across the country.

The bank promotes financing energy efficiency technologies in industries that reduce energy consumption, lower operational costs, and promote sustainability. The financing include upgrading existing machineries/equipment to energy-efficient technologies, such as advanced machinery, optimized heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and energy-efficient lighting. Additionally, industries may pursue fuel switching, transitioning from high-carbon energy sources like coal or oil to cleaner alternatives such as electrifying boiler, biofuels, or renewable energy sources. Switching to energy-efficient equipment and adopting cleaner fuels can significantly reduce energy consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improve overall operational efficiency.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that implementing efficiency measures can reduce the global need for primary energy by 900 million tons of oil equivalent through 2020. Most of these savings would occur in sectors such as transportation, construction, and agriculture—industries well populated by SMEs.

Agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood for a significant portion of Nepal’s population, with 19.44 million Nepal’s, out of a total population of 29.16 million, relying on farming. Among these individuals, 9.54 million (representing 49.1 percent) are male, and 9.90 million (50.9 percent) are female. According to the census, agricultural households make up 62 percent of the total households in the country. Notably, the average size of these farm households has decreased from 5.4 persons in 2011/12 to 4.7 persons in 2021/22.
Central bank’s concerted efforts to emphasize agricultural loans and instruct banks and financial institutions (BFIs) to allocate 13 percent of their loans

In general, Green Homes are the buildings designed to be environmentally sustainable. Green home focus on the efficient use of “energy, water and building materials” which reduce the pressure on natural resources and limiting the carbon emissions. It encourages the eco- friendly practices for conserving the water and waste management systems such as rainwater harvesting, waste water recycling, composting of organic waste generated in the premises of the building and also introduce or increase the green space. It leads for energy efficient buildings, use of renewable energy resources such as solar and promote natural lighting and ventilation. Therefore, green homes are more than the green buildings which reflects a sustainable lifestyle based on environment- friendly or earth friendly systems.
With Global Green Home Loan, you can own a beautiful environmentally responsible residence. With this tagline Global IME Bank is promoting its Green home product. The bank offers this product with specific eligibility criteria and a competitive interest rate.

Electric vehicles (EVs) offer key environmental and economic benefits. They avoid greenhouse gas emissions, are quieter, require less maintenance, and have lower operating costs than traditional vehicles. Worldwide, EV sales are growing rapidly, and Nepal too has one of the highest adoption rates.
Cities like Kathmandu are grappling with significant air quality issues due to high levels of emissions. Electric vehicles can help tackle these challenges by providing a cleaner alternative that produces zero tailpipe emissions, leading to improved air quality and healthier urban environments.
From an economic standpoint, the adoption of electric mobility can reduce Nepal's reliance on imported fossil fuels, which currently place a significant burden on the country's foreign exchange reserves. With electricity generation from renewable sources, such as hydropower, EVs offer the opportunity to utilize domestically produced energy, thereby saving money and strengthening energy security. Furthermore, the growth of the electric vehicle sector can create jobs in manufacturing, maintenance, and infrastructure development, such as charging stations. Electric mobility can also contribute to the diversification of Nepal's energy sector, reducing vulnerability to fluctuations in global oil prices.
At Global IME Bank, we are committed to supporting the adoption of electric vehicles as part of our broader efforts to foster a greener future for Nepal. By promoting electric mobility, we aim to contribute to reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality, and strengthening the country’s economy.
