Global IME Bank Ltd. has successful concluded the first Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) Hackathon named “Global IME AI/ML Hackathon.” The event, a first of its kind in Nepali banking industry, was graced by the esteemed presence of Nepal Rastra Bank Deputy Governor Mr. Bam Bahadur Mishra as the Chief Guest alongside the Bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, senior management, and representatives from a number of organizations.
The hackathon planned meticulously designed to attract students, startups, developers, data scientists and researchers with a technology background and ultimately aimed to develop new, technology-driven banking products.
Out of over 150 online paper submissions, 21 teams were selected and invited to the premises to participate in the hackathon. The participants were from different areas in Nepal such as Kathmandu, Mahendranagar, Pokhara, Birgunj, Kavre, and Dharan, which not only showed the interest but also the talents available in different cities of the country.
The hackathon saw innovative solutions presented across various critical banking domains. Team Calculus emerged as the grand winner for their project on “Personalized Financial Management & Retention Offers.” Following closely, WDK secured the 1st Runner-Up position for their work on “Classifying Images/PDFs using Computer Vision Techniques.” Larkey Pass was recognized as the 2nd Runner-Up for their “Predictive Analysis for Branch Revenue” solution. Both Team Janakpur and Fraudex were awarded as 3rd Runner-Up and 4th Runner-Up respectively, for their contributions to “Suspicious Transaction Detection.” Additionally, Dizzy Bits earned the “Best Presentation” award for their demonstration on “Classifying Images/PDFs using Computer Vision Techniques.”
The event featured a distinguished roster of keynote speakers including Dr. Sudan Jha, Professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at Kathmandu University, Nepal. Mr. John B. Park, a prominent Technology Strategist and former Chief Architect at Capital Group. Concluding the keynotes was Dr. Suresh Manandhar, an esteemed AI Scientist and currently the CEO & Chief Scientist of Wiseyak Inc. Their collective contributions significantly enriched the intellectual discourse of the event.
Mr. Bam Bahadur Mishra, Deputy Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank, personally presented the prize money to the winning teams. He commended Global IME Bank for organizing Nepal’s inaugural AI/ML hackathon, emphasizing its significance in providing opportunities for youth and students as well as for propelling the innovation in digital banking. He expressed confidence that such initiatives would lead to more effective utilization of innovative technologies in banking domain.
Mr. Surendra Raj Regmi, the Chief Executive Officer of Global IME Bank, has presented the Bank’s vision of the hackathon. The CEO pointed out that “This hackathon will be one of the possible ways by which digital banking can be made efficient and innovative services can be developed. Moreover, the bank will continue to work on cooperation with those teams from this competition, which are regarded as the best.”
The hackathon was conducted in three phases;
- First Round – Digital Paper Submission
- Second Round – On premise coding the product
- Third Round – Presenting the demo.
